Dr. Theodore M. King, one of the early innovators and advocates of women's health, was the driving force behind the founding of Jhpiego, an affiliate of Johns Hopkins University. Originally known as the Johns Hopkins Program for International Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology, the organization was funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Under King's leadership, as founder, administrator and later president of Jhpiego for 14 years, How did we get from there to here? From the beginning, Jhpiego has established itself as a leader in reproductive health training.

Beginning in 1974, Jhpiego held family planning/reproductive health training sessions for doctors and nurses in the US. In 1979, Jhpiego started its first in-country training programs in Tunisia, Brazil, Kenya, Nigeria, Thailand and the Philippines. From 1987 to 2004, Jhpiego conducted three USAID-funded Reproductive Health Projects global trainings. Starting in 1993, Jhpiego published teaching materials on long-term family planning methods.
